About Us: Margaret and Bill Chestnut
Margaret is originally from Glasgow, Scotland but made Sydney her home. Until the end of 2000
Margaret taught General
Studies and Legal Studies and was responsible for an integrated
welfare system
for 1100 students at a very multicultural Girls
High School. Bill
was born in Sydney
and taught Industrial Engineering at Sydney Institute of Technology
where he
specialised in Quality Management. He wrote and published text books,
and led
workshops and seminars.
After visiting Tasmania
many, many times we took early retirement from teaching and moved south
to Tasmania. We were looking for a five acre block with
a view where Bill could grow vegetables. We
settled for 22 acres with no vegetables (yet) but we did get the
view! What a view! We've been at Inverawe since early
2001.
How Inverawe got its name. We wanted a name that was distinctive, easy to remember and reflected Margaret’s Scottish heritage. “Inver” means at the mouth of and we are at the mouth of the North West Bay River. As a name that’s a bit longwinded but the view filled us with awe, and so did the amount of work we had in front of us, so Inverawe it was. When we checked the name on the web we found there is an Inverawe in Scotland, not too far from where Margaret grew up.
Over time we’ve visited great gardens in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. We intend turning Inverawe into one of Tasmania's great gardens. Wander the pathways and see what you think.
