Botanists and Explorers’ Experience Tour

Take two hours at Inverawe to connect with an important and neglected part of Australian history.  The French explorers were here, over 200 years ago, and so too were the people who laid the foundations of Australian scientific botany – the Frenchman Labillardiere and the Scot Robert Brown.  D’Entrecasteaux’s 1792 expedition was the first to map North West Bay, which Inverawe overlooks.   Baudin’s French expedition of 1803 anchored just off the point.

  • See some of the 1000 species of Australian plants that Robert Brown and Labillardiere named.
  • See the colours and textures, and scent the fragrances that so excited those first European visitors.
  • Take home a CD of high res images as a souvenir of your visit.
  • Pot up one of the plants named by those early botanists, to take home or add to the Inverawe collection.
  • Have tea on the terrace as you listen to the chatter of some of our 90 bird species, and imagine a French ship coming down the Bay.
